Environment That's Safe

Environment That's Safe

Its important to have a safe and supportive school climate and community to help prevent bullying. Safety starts not just within the community but at school. They should feel safe everywhere including church, library, work, and school. Everyone at school should work together to create a welcoming climate to prevent bullying and saying "Bullying is not welcome here."

               Safe and Supportive Environment
  • A culture of inclusion of respect of students is important so students feel welcomed. Its important to reward students when they are respectful to one another. https://www.pbis.org/
  • Its important for students to interact in a safely manner. Faculty members should monitor where bullying could happen the most often. This includes bathrooms, lunchroom, and the playground.
  • Everyone on the faculty should watch out for bullying not just teachers.
  • Set a tone of respect within the classroom. Make sure to keep the classroom well managed.
Classroom Management

  • Creating Ground Rules.
                  -  Develop rules with your students so they can set there own climate for respect and feel responsible.
                  - Use terms that are positive.

                  -  Support the rules that are school wide. https://www.stopbullying.gov/prevention/at-school/rules/index.html

  • Reinforce The Rules.
                                                                                                                        -  Make sure you be an example and follow the rules yourself. Make sure your respectful towards the students.
                          -  Expectations are met to be clear.
                                                                                                                        -  Reward the good behavior.

                          -  Give feedback.

                          - Correct behavior. Help the understand that behaving a certain way is wrong and why. There are always consequences for there actions.

         Classroom Meetings
Having Classroom Meetings provide students with a way to give feedback about school issues and concerns about non school issues. The meetings can give teachers an idea about whats going on with students and there lives in school. Its also a way to help students feel safety.

This is a way for students to feel safe for where culture of respect is established. These meetings are short. When holding these meetings make them held on a regular basis. During these meetings

  • Establish rules within the classroom. Kids should feel comfortable and safe to talk about everything with the classroom.
  • Make sure to focus on specific issues such as bullying or how to be bullying. These meeting can address specific problems. Specific solutions should be discussed. Use open ended questions.

                        -  Give examples of how they can help one another.

                        -  Share example of someone who made another person feel bad.

                        -  What can be done to help those who are being bullying. What do people who witness bullying do?
                        -   How can we as adults help with bullying?

  • Make sure to end the meeting with a reminder that its everyone's job to make the school a safe environment. Make sure to tell kids they can talk to anyone about being bullying and seek help.
  • Follow up with student and make sure they are doing ok.
