Bullying Bystanders

Bullying Bystanders

A bystander is someone who witnesses someone either it be in person or online. Anyone including friends, parents, children, and faculty members can be bystanders. When it comes to Cyberbullying strangers can be the bystanders.

When it comes to youth being bystanders they have different roles they play. https://kierstisocialmediabullying.blogspot.com/2018/10/bullying-what-roles-do-kids-play.html. You might not think that bystanders can be affected by bullying but they can. https://www.stopbullying.gov/sites/default/files/2018-08/Bystander-Factsheet.pdf. Everyone including bystanders have the chance to change and make a difference in someones life by becoming an up-stander and standing up to bullying.

Youth will sometimes feel lonely because people will witness the bullying and nothing is done about it like someone doesn't care. There are many reasons a bystander might not intervene.

Up-standers take action and stand up to the bully when they witness the bullying happen. Everyone can make a difference when they see it happening. The youth are least depressed and more happier when they take action against bullying.

How to go from a bystander to an up-stander

  • Its important to question the behavior at hand.
  • Redirect the question making a joke out of it.
  • Intervene as a group.
  • Walk with the person who is being targeted to send a message.
  • Check in with the person to see if there ok letting them know that you do not agree with what is going on.
  • Be a hero.

Faculty members and other educators can help you learn more about up-standers and bystanders. Its important to learn about strategies for special needs at school to help prevent bullying.

A Working Community

A Working Community

If the community works together bullying has a way to be prevented. There are many community wide strategies that can help even identify the children who are having a problem with bullying, who are bullying, and even change attitudes of adults, children, and even youth who tolerate the bullying.

Benefits of working together

Potential Partners

Involve anyone who wants to learn and be involved within the community. Consider involving, business's, parents, youth, and people who work with kids.

  • Identify those who works best with those who are bullying or are being bullied. Examples include therapists, service groups. law officers, faith organizations, and service groups.
  • Learn what members in the community see and discuss ways to improve the solution.
  • Work and involve the youth. They are born leaders and can take roles as leaders to prevent bullying within younger kids.

Environment That's Safe

Environment That's Safe

Its important to have a safe and supportive school climate and community to help prevent bullying. Safety starts not just within the community but at school. They should feel safe everywhere including church, library, work, and school. Everyone at school should work together to create a welcoming climate to prevent bullying and saying "Bullying is not welcome here."

               Safe and Supportive Environment
  • A culture of inclusion of respect of students is important so students feel welcomed. Its important to reward students when they are respectful to one another. https://www.pbis.org/
  • Its important for students to interact in a safely manner. Faculty members should monitor where bullying could happen the most often. This includes bathrooms, lunchroom, and the playground.
  • Everyone on the faculty should watch out for bullying not just teachers.
  • Set a tone of respect within the classroom. Make sure to keep the classroom well managed.
Classroom Management

  • Creating Ground Rules.
                  -  Develop rules with your students so they can set there own climate for respect and feel responsible.
                  - Use terms that are positive.

                  -  Support the rules that are school wide. https://www.stopbullying.gov/prevention/at-school/rules/index.html

  • Reinforce The Rules.
                                                                                                                        -  Make sure you be an example and follow the rules yourself. Make sure your respectful towards the students.
                          -  Expectations are met to be clear.
                                                                                                                        -  Reward the good behavior.

                          -  Give feedback.

                          - Correct behavior. Help the understand that behaving a certain way is wrong and why. There are always consequences for there actions.

         Classroom Meetings
Having Classroom Meetings provide students with a way to give feedback about school issues and concerns about non school issues. The meetings can give teachers an idea about whats going on with students and there lives in school. Its also a way to help students feel safety.

This is a way for students to feel safe for where culture of respect is established. These meetings are short. When holding these meetings make them held on a regular basis. During these meetings

  • Establish rules within the classroom. Kids should feel comfortable and safe to talk about everything with the classroom.
  • Make sure to focus on specific issues such as bullying or how to be bullying. These meeting can address specific problems. Specific solutions should be discussed. Use open ended questions.

                        -  Give examples of how they can help one another.

                        -  Share example of someone who made another person feel bad.

                        -  What can be done to help those who are being bullying. What do people who witness bullying do?
                        -   How can we as adults help with bullying?

  • Make sure to end the meeting with a reminder that its everyone's job to make the school a safe environment. Make sure to tell kids they can talk to anyone about being bullying and seek help.
  • Follow up with student and make sure they are doing ok.
